Information on What Pateley Bridge in the Yorkshire Dales Offers for Cottage Holidays

Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale, in the south east of the Yorkshire Dales, is a fair sized town with a high street that goes uphill. It's home to the Nidderdale Museum and the so called 'Oldest Sweet Shop' in England although there are others laying claim to this title, including one in Knaresborough, near Harrogate.

A good rest place and watering hole for walkers, Pateley Bridge has several good pubs and tea shops serving substantial lunches and afternoon teas.  There is a bandstand surrounded by chairs in a large park which must be very pleasant to sit in, or picnic in, on a sunny summer's day. There is also a swing park for children.

There is a real bridge over the River Nidd, beside which is an electronic device for measuring the water level. It is interesting to note that the River Nidd disappears in two places down pot holes to continue its journey underground.

Large exposed rocks carved by nature stand on the moors above Pateley Bridge. It's possible to follow a circular walk to view nature's amazing sculpture of Brimham Rocks,

How Stean Gorge is more of an adventure trail of narrow footpaths and bridges in a deep ravine or gorge. It has developed into quite a visitor attraction with a variety of activities such as abseiling.and caving on offer. Hire a bicycle at a very reasonable rate for a days' cycling. There is a restaurant and cafe for refreshments.

You may also wish to visit  local show caves or reservoirs at Angram, Scar House and Gouthwaite for good views in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a large car park with toilets and a picnic area for visitors at Scar House. All reservoirs are excellent spots for bird watching.

Pateley Bridge and the Yorkshire Dales are highly recommended for a self-catering holiday in a beautiful part of northern England.
